Homework for the week of January 15 to 19 see below

Dear Parents and Students,

This past week we completed two of three math tests and four Mad minutes which are multiplication tests which have anywhere from 10 to 25 math facts which require answers within one minute.  Grade 4 is the year when our young children at this grade go from being primary students to junior students. With that switch also comes a greater need for serious studying. Knowing one’s multiplication facts is paramount in order to find success in all math strands. Last year the students learned math facts in a concrete manner such as sorting twelve buttons into three equal groups and concluding that 3 x 4 =12. In Grade 4 the students have to know their math facts by heart...they must be memorized. Daily drill including math games, seems to be the only way that these facts can be learned.

This week parents will see a duotang that will require that each test/quiz be signed so that parents are aware of their child’s standings. I urge you to help your child every day to learn a new math table so that he/she can be successful at math and feel confident.

Tomorrow is the final test in math. This test will be in Data Management.

Please look for the duotang as of Tuesday.
Thank you,
Sincerely,

Ms. MacKinnon OCT

Science practice questions

Dear afternoon class,

Please complete your pictures of two habitats.

Next, make certain you can answer these questions in full sentences. Since you have your notebook and duotang in your bag use your notes to inform your answers.

Practice Questions for Tuesday
1. Name three different animals that have three very different  habitats. Why is their habitat made the way it is. For example a squirrel uses mud, leaves and sticks high up in a tree. They make the mud and then layer it with sticks for strength and leaves for covering to keep weather like rain and extreme heat out. They make their homes high on the tree so that predators won't get them. If they choose their tree well, such as an oak tree, they could also have their food source close by.

2. How are plant seeds repopulated by animals?

3. Using the sheet entitled, What's For Dinner", What are the three categories of animals based on their food preferences?

4. Classify these animals into the three different categories.

cat, dog, frog, insects, lion, snake, worms, fox, ducks, robin, gorilla, elephant, tigers, wolf, goldfish, ats, pigs, bears, crow

Good job... we will discuss the answers to this homework tomorrow.

1. What is a habitat?

2. What is behavioral adaptation?

3. What is structural adaptaion

4. What are the five things that all plants an animals need?

5. Name three habitat communities an identify the plants they need to live.

6. What animal depends on another animal for protection?

Math plan for the first week back in 2018!

Dear Parents and students,

Happy New Year! I hope that the holiday finds you all refreshed and ready for a great start back in this new year. As promised to the students prior to leaving for the break, we will be having a series of tests to see what information the students have truly learned in the first term of school. That being said there will be a Math quiz on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of the first week back. A different strand of math will be covered in each test and will be highlighted in this blog today and over the next couple of days. Practice math test questions will also be provided to refresh your memory. In the past, questions that have been included on the blog have been very similar to actual test questions so brushing up with these questions will ensure good or better than good results.

At the beginning of the year I told the students that by the new year a solid understanding of multiplication facts must be grasped. Therefore, every other day the students will be receiving Mad Minutes which are timed multiplication tests. Therefore the students will get a sheet of paper with 20 or so questions and be given one minute to complete the quiz. This gives them about three seconds for each problem. It may seem too rushed but if I were to ask you what 5 x 5 was before even thinking you would know to write 25. In the next post I will post questions for practicing.

Good luck,
Sincerely,
Ms. MacKinnon

Here are the groupings again and your link for the marks that you have earned. If you have a level 1 (you must go back and bring up your mark)
Dear Dana,

I really enjoyed reading your post. I specifically loved how you wrote about your trip to Bayshore so you could get the deal of the century! I was impressed with your idea about your trip and wondered how you even found out about this great deal? Going forward, Dana, you might want to consider editing your work so that your capitals are at the beginning of each sentence AND all of your proper nouns. In addition, you might also want to consider using ACCURATE punctuation such as not only using periods. I am sure your life is more exciting than that! Once again, thank you so much for the enjoyable post! I would love to read how everything went after your trip to Bayshore. Perhaps you could write me back in this blog.

Sincerely,
Patricia

Homework for the week of December 11-15

Dear Kiddums,

First of all, thank you to those of you who paid close attention to the deadlines, to getting homework done on time and for making great comments this week. Not everyone did their homework and I wonder if it is because I am away, but I am taking the time to still try to teach, and I do that because I truly want what is best for you, specifically the chance to practice skills and getting better. Upon my return, I will keep going and if you are behind then you will not have done yourself any favours.

Afternoon group: keep researching animals and habitats. There are so many good Youtube videos, Kratts Creatures is a fabulous way to learn about animals, their nature and their habitats. Enclosed I have linked for you the episodes for this amazing kids show. Enjoy!
